Mali: report 2007

March 2007: The participation of the AAG at the CROCEP workshop, from the 12 th to the 15 th of March, required a lot from Sophie. We hope that the efforts undertaken in the different fields of healthcare will result in; better treatment of malnutrition; improvement in access to and quality of healthcare for everyone but in particular for the most disadvantaged; provision of free treatment of malaria for children under five years of age; and creation of a blood bank at the hospital. The week finishes with a large gathering for the launch of the family planning (contraception) programme which will reduce the maternal and infant mortality rates.

Fabienne, who came from Vierzon/FR at the end of February for a week, has put in place an administrative structure for the treatment of malnutrition, in accordance with the national plan. She also advised Assada on how to use the computer. The Euros which she left on her departure have been used to paint the floor of the maternity unit which is now finished. Thank you Fabienne for your valuable help.

The appreciation shown by the national missions who have visited us encourage the whole CSCOM team who all feel involved in, and responsible for, the proper maintenance of premises and administrative files and the reception of patients. Malnourished infants receive quality care and attention from a devoted staff.

Generally the orphans are well despite an abrupt increase in temperature, a hot wind and the permanent dust which results in respiratory difficulties.

April 2007: This year the hot season will be longer than usual as it has started earlier than usual. The river waters have receded and cultivation of vegetables has ceased. The few fruit and vegetables available come from Sikasso. The bush is very dry and the wait for the rainy season will be difficult. Prices of basic foodstuffs remain very high. The orphans and malnourished children are partially sheltered from this situation by the AAG programme and the national programme to end malnutrition. Others in disadvantaged families are more likely to suffer.

We have lost two children this month due to unknown causes. Despite our heavy hearts we must maintain our hope and faith in what we do.

URGENT: In order to rapidly diagnose the different forms of malaria, we are looking for a laboratory microscope with the necessary accessories. Thank you for your help.
